Dr. James C Johnston is uniquely qualified for his role in advancing global neurology, and has served as an Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia over the past decade.

He completed neurology training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston under Dr. Frank Yatsu, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and holds separate certification in Neurorehabilitation. Dr. Johnston completed law school 20 years ago, is certified by the Supreme Courts of Texas and Washington, and as a Barrister of the High Court of New Zealand.

He is one of the very few neurologists in the world dually qualified as an attorney, and licensed to practice both medicine and law.

Dr. Johnston combined his medical and legal training and experience to establish GlobalNeurology®, an international partnership of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroethicists dedicated to advancing sustainable evidence based neurological care.

He established the non-profit organization Global NeuroCare® to advance neurological services in developing regions. This organization focuses on a long-standing collaborative partnership with the Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences Department of Neurology in Ethiopia.

Accredited by the World Health Organization, Global NeuroCare® is one of the few organizations holding Special Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) ECOSOC. Dr. Johnston has presented several policy recommendation statements at the UN High Level Political Forum, Commission for Social Development and Integrative Segment, which were adopted and published, all contributing to advancing healthcare in developing regions.

Dr. Johnston has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and letters spanning a wide variety of leading journals including the Neurologic Clinics, Journal of Neurological Sciences, Neurology, Journal of Child Neurology, Journal of Legal Medicine, Journal of Medical Ethics, Headache, Surgery Journal, and Medical Law International.

He has contributed a dozen book chapters in leading treatises on medical law including the American College of Legal Medicine textbook Legal Medicine and Medical Ethics and the internationally acclaimed Legal and Forensic Medicine, which have been cited throughout the world.

Dr. Johnston actively participates in a number of professional organizations and societies, and holds Fellowship status in both the American College of Legal Medicine and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine.
